| Eligibility: | Cabell, Wayne Co. persons legally blind/severely visually impaired. Central visual acuity of 20/200 in better eye with best correction, visual restriction of no greater than 20 degrees in better eye, or disorder 1/2 field or greater vision loss in eyes |
| Description: | There are two divisions of Cabee-Wayne Association of the Blind 1. Association Membership 2. Services Division 1. CABELL-WAYNE ASSOCIATION OF THE BLIND: Services: Oversees the CWAB Services for the Blind, electing its Board of Directors. Mission: To enable blind and visually impaired individuals to acheive equality of access and maintain a lifestyle comparable to sighted members of the community. 2. CWAB SERVICES DIVISION: Primarily funded by the Teubert Foundation, private donations and grants. To enable blind and visually impaired individuals to achieve equality of access and maintain a lifestyle comparable to sighted members of the community. TRANSPORTATION (must choose between the following options): > Free van transportation services offered for necessary travel to work, doctor, group activities, shopping and more. OR > Alternative Transportation Program: Offers consumers a yearly allotment of free taxi and/or TTA tickets. (first come, first serve) ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY: Utilizes a variety of techniques to guide consumers through tasks, such as public transportation and shopping. SEEING EYE DOGS: Can provide referrals for persons in need of seeing eye dogs. MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLAN ASSISTANCE: Will assist their consumers in chosing the appropriate plan. REHABILITATION: Provides devices and techniques to improve day-to-day activities, such as cooking. TECHNOLOGY SERVICES: > Adaptive equipment for loan or use within the resource center. Includes computers with enlarged vision adaptation and voice adaptation.. > Training in the use of adaptive equipment, including computer programs. VISION CONSERVATION PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN: Out of funding for 2010. Usually only for children who are unable to obtain their glasses through WV DHHR services. Can assist with eye exams and glasses for qualified children (one examination and one pair of glasses/ yr.) . Referrals from parents or any agency seeing the child's need for glasses. Must provide proof of income and a signed financial need survey form provided by the CWAB. Serves children over 18 if they are still enrolled in public school. VISION CONSERVATION PROGRAM FOR ADULTS: Must be already pre-approved for CWAB services. Assists legally blind adults who meet income guidelines obtain glasses (cap on price of frames and limited to one eye exam/one pair of glasses every two years). INDEPENDENT LIVING ASSISTANCE: > Visit clients in homes for asessment of needs. > Provides reading assistance for consumers with tasks of living such as filling out applications, reading in-coming mail, handling bill payments, and reading/visual descriptions when shopping. SUPPORT GROUPS: > Adult Blind & Visually Impaired > Blind & Visually Impaired Diabetics > Working Persons Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired LEGAL ISSUES - COMPLIANCE WITH A.D.A.: Technical assistance with groups/businesses needing to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. EDUCATION: > Public education through publication, audio/visual presentations, special events and public service announcements. SPEAKERS BUREAU: Speakers available. VOLUNTEERISM: Can use volunteers to assist in the office or assist clients directly. RECREATION: Recreation, outings and special events for members. TEUBERT PREP PROGRAM: For students in Cabell/Wayne counties with visual impairment/blindness. Ages 5-18. Recreational, cultural and social activities using a peer base. |
